Glue trailer
The trailer begins with the diegetic sound of birds chirping and wind blowing alongside an establishing shot of a picturesque hillside; the peaceful and uncorrupted countryside, with grass swaying in the breeze. This is followed by a slow motion shot of a necklace chain falling, with the diegetic sound of the chain rustling, before erupting into grungy, non-diegetic music, drums and guitar sound and a female voice sings eerily. This signifies the chaos which is likely to follow, this foreshadows the plot of the TV drama being shown. This is suggestive of the chain being a possible symbol as it is seen multiple times throughout. The shots of nature grow more corrupted with tracking shots of characters running in slow motion. The pace of the editing is irregular, some shots faster than others, quick shots of a sexual nature appear suggestive of the themes explored within the show. Death is a reoccurring theme throughout. There is a close up shot of blood suspended in a trickling stream, a still shot of a newspaper crumpled up, the stand alone word ‘murder’ clearly visible to the audience and the shot of the car in flames, followed by an extreme close up of this.
The non-diegetic
sound contains the repetitive lyrics ‘love is to die, love is to not die’ which
reinforces the mysterious and eerie theme suggestion, although little is given
away in terms of plot, the genre is clear, it is a crime drama, this is made
especially clear through the use of police tape and the slow pace of the
non-diegetic sound throughout which is disturbing.
Interestingly the
use of the colour red is repeated throughout, in the use of blood, the mid shot
of a girl character waving flares in the air as well as an extreme close up of
a female character with deep red hair.
The low key
lighting used on many occasions in this trailer creates a sense of mystery and
captivates the audience by giving an eerie feel to it.
The fourth wall
is broken, there are multiple close up and midi-shots throughout where the
subject in the shot is making direct eye contact with the camera, creating this
sense of unease with the audience and building tension.
The contrast
which these characters create against the calmness and simplicity of the rural
countryside is a strong juxtaposition and highlights the chaos and trouble they
bring, it shows the characters troublesome nature and foreshadows the trouble
they will make within the plot.
The young cast
and wild atmosphere created by them, suggests that the target audience will
also be young.
Some really insightful analysis, Ella. Lots of film language embedded.
