'Superman Returns' sound and editing deconstruction

This teaser trailer is from Bryan Singer's 2006 superhero film 'Superman Returns'.
  • The teaser trailer opens with an ominous and droning non-diegetic background track which plays throughout the trailer and builds up as a crescendo.
  • The trailer uses very few straight-cut edits, rather it mostly uses faded edits to break up the shots. This gives the trailer as a whole a very fluid yet ominous and mysterious feeling.
  • The trailer's non-diegetic music interacts with the trailer's visual faded cut edits. An example of this is in the shot at 00:30 of the mailbox with the sunrise in the background. As this shot fades in, a non-diegetic trumpet begins which reflects the almost awakening and still mysterious effect and feeling of the trailer.
  • More orchestral instruments are introduced to the trailer's non-diegetic background music as the trailer continues to gradually build the awe of the audience as intriguing and awe-inspiring shots of Superman are shown using the faded cut edits.
  • As the trailer reaches its climax, its non-diegetic music also reaches a rousing conclusion. This is reflected as the famous Superman logo is shown on screen as well as the film's release date. The build up and climax created within the trailer is an effective convention used in the superhero and action genre as it conveys mystery and an ominous feeling before an almost "big reveal" at the end of the trailer which outlines the underlying themes within many superhero films.
